چکیده

[1] Anomalous climate is often regulated by the annual cycle. Based on this physical consideration, we propose a new method termed as Season-reliant Empirical Orthogonal Function (S-EOF) analysis to detect major modes of climate variability. The S-EOF analysis of Indo-Pacific SST during the past 54 years reveals two statistically significant leading modes, which are not obtainable by using conventional EOF analysis. These modes represent the Indo-Pacific LowFrequency (LF) and Quasi-Biennial (QB) modes associated ENSO, and reveal the fundamental differences between the LF and QB modes in their seasonal evolution, fractional variance structure, and interdecadal variation and trend. The interdecadal variability is coupled with the LF mode, suggesting that decadal-interdecadal SST variation is primarily represented by the ENSO-like interdecadal regime shift in the late 1970s. A warming trend is mingled with the QB mode, accounting for a large portion of the local SST variability in the Maritime Continentwestern Pacific horseshoe region. Citation: Wang, B., and S.-I. Robust GEFA Assessment of Climate Feedback to SST EOF Modes

Atmospheric response to SST variability was estimated using generalized equilibrium feedback analysis (GEFA) in the SST EOF space with synthesis data from an idealized climate model. Results show that the GEFA atmospheric response to the leading SST EOF modes is much more accurate and robust than the GEFA feedback matrix in physical space. Therefore, GEFA provides a practical method for assessi...

Spatiotemporal Variability in Start and End of Growing Season in China Related to Climate Variability

Satellite-derived vegetation phenophases are frequently used to study the response of ecosystems to climate change. However, limited studies have identified the common phenological variability across different climate and vegetation zones. Using NOAA/Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) dataset, we estimated start of growing season (SOS)...

Winter precipitation variability and corresponding teleconnections over the northeastern United States

The variability of winter precipitation over the northeastern United States and the corresponding teleconnections with five dominant large-scale modes of climate variability (Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, AMO; North Atlantic Oscillation, NAO; Pacific-North American pattern, PNA; Pacific Decadal Oscillation, PDO; and El Niño–Southern Oscillation, ENSO) were systemically analyzed in this stu...

Global upper ocean heat content and climate variability

Observational data from the Global Temperature and Salinity Profile Program were used to calculate the upper ocean heat content (OHC) anomaly. The thickness of the upper layer is taken as 300 m for the Pacific/Atlantic Ocean and 150 m for the Indian Ocean since the Indian Ocean has shallower thermoclines. First, the optimal spectral decomposition scheme was used to build up monthly synoptic tem...

On the CMD Projection Method and the associated Statistical Tests in Climate Data Analysis

The composite mean difference (CMD) projection method is similar to the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) expansion commonly used in climate data analysis except that its first mode is empirically defined to be phenomenon-specific instead of being the mode that explains the most variance in the data as in the latter. The EOF, being a mathematically defined statistical quantity, may contain co...
